An astounding array of work is to be exhibited in the Virginia Commonwealth University BFA Photography Show of 2012 with an opening reception on Friday, May 4 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Gallery A, 114-A Virginia Street in Richmond.
This extensive exhibition includes work from graduating senior students: Christi Addison, Fionnuala Bradley, Jami Carlton, Levi Cheff, Will Douglas, Kara Groux, Emily Jones, Bree Davis, Sara Tyler, Stephen Turner, Stephen Wozny, Andrew Jordan, Alex Leslie, Charley Monaghan, Kevin Murphy, Melissa Rabin, Lauren Rice, Stephanie Fry, Anna Hendrick, Cate Henry, and Seychelle Stableford.
Paul Thulin, Interim Chair of the Photography and Film Department, and Assistant Professor Brian Ulrich and Adjunct Professor Shane Rocheleau provided guidance for the production of the show. The Virginia Museum of Fine Art’s Paul Mellon Collection Educator, professional photographer, and Virginia Commonwealth University alum Jeffrey Allison acted as a Juror in selecting the art to be included in the Show and will choose Best in Show, Runner Up, and honorable mentions.
This innovative and talented group has created an extensive student collective tasked to promote and fund this eclectic show. A Facebook page, a Kickstarter page and a film were produced to encourage attendance. Additionally, several bake and craft sales were held to help defray costs and expand awareness.
As a Professor in the Department, Brian Ulrich has shared his view of development of the talent of the artists. “Since arriving as an assistant professor of Photography and Film last fall, watching the senior BFA class progress and develop their work and vision has been nothing short of inspiring. They have cultivated a commitment to ideas grand in scope and nature that will continue to sustain them far beyond their studies, which in many ways is what one hopes to see in young artists.”
“The work produced by this group is representative of the convergence of our private and public selves alongside the steady broadcast of societal and political information. The simple fact that this talented group finds a way to process all this noise in the world, their world, into photographs that are rich in creativity, aesthetics and narrative is a testament to the hope in artistic process.” as stated by Brian Ulrich.
Professor in the Department of Photography and Film, Shane Rocheleau says of his experience with the senior students that “I get excited looking at the expanse of their work. . . You’ll see it in stories, love, confusion, landscapes, humor, family, and even drag queens. It’s all there and so is so, much more.”
Paul Thulin, Interim Chair of the Department describes the show: “This year our seniors have created impressive photographic portfolios truly representative of the unique creative talent, aesthetic sensibilities, and research pursuits enriching Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Photography and Film. This exhibition is going to be an exciting public event that all fine art photography enthusiasts will enjoy. These emerging artists are to be commended for their entrepreneurial spirit as well as their desire to share their amazing artwork.”
The show will be open during gallery hours, 12-6, on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday from 11-3. Finally, a discussion of the seniors’ work will be held May 7 at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Grace Street Theater, Noon - 6pm.
